#R29Collabs is Refinery29’s Instagram-first creative collaborations where we work with designers, illustrators, photographers, and other artists from around the world to create unique social content that educates, empowers, and inspires our readers.
For #APAHM – Asian American Pacific Islander History Month – we collaborated with Decue Wu, a Chinese born illustrator working in Los Angeles. We wanted to feature some of our favorite Asian American and Pacific Islander American thinkers and their stories about the rewards, challenges, and realities of straddling two identities — especially when the compatibility of the two has recently come under attack. The portraits included actress Constance Wu, actress Jenna Ushkowitz, Senator Tammy Duckworth, and Princess Ka'iulani of Hawaii.
